Retribution of Scyrah

I mentioned last time, that I had commission work coming in that would cause the personal projects to get set aside for a while.  Well, here’s an update on what’s going on!

The main commission I was talking about is a pair of 75-pt Retribution lists with about 20 pts of overlap.  The inspiration for the paint scheme comes from Hampster Cage Studio’s midnight inspired and LED lit Hyperion, and (I think) the client’s Alma Mater, UFL.  This gave us a nice bit of contrast in a dominant set of complementary colors:  blue and orange.

The main scheme should use blue for armor and orange for cloth, and then invert that for anything with the Dawnguard label.  Including Imperatus.  Of course, Retribution has loads of glowy bits, so the obvious solution is to use the opposite color as the glowy bits.  So, there’s a lot of play between the complementary colors, and since the blue will be very dark and the orange rather bright, there’s also some contrast in value.

I chose a House Shyeel Artificer and Dawnguard Scyir as the test models for a few reasons.  One, they’re metal so if it all went to shit, I could just throw them in the soup and not worry about it.  Two, they each showcase the scheme in different ways.  The Artificer has lots of armor and cloth, but isn’t a Dawnguard model, so would show blue with orange.  The Scyir would show orange with blue.  Since they had opposite colors for armor, they’d also let me work out the proper recipes for orange and blue glowy bits.

It’s been a while since I had a battle report for you, so it’s about damn time, eh?  Enjoy!

We’re part way into the War-Torn Alliances league, here in Virginia, and on Thursday, I had the pleasure of playing against Chris’ Retribution at 25pts.

Chris' nicely painted green Retribution force!

His list consisted of:

* Phoenix
* Hydra
Sentinels (max) + UA
Mage Hunter Assassin

 My list was an expansion of the Legion battlebox, adding a second heavy and some support to play on Lylyth’s ability to run a mini Shredder Swarm.

My Legion of Aquablight!

My list was:

* Carnivean
* Ravagore
* 4x Shredder
2x Shepherd

I had league patches and bits from a group bits order to pass out, so Chris was kind enough to set up the board and pick an objective.  He chose the League specific “Whirling Gauntlet” Scneario.  It features a zone on the opponen’s half of the board you need to control, as well as a 5″ cloud AOE that randomly scatters every turn.  Any model it lands on gets thrown, and any models fighting inside it suffer -2 to hit.

Fun!  Or so I thought…

Last Thursday, we had a Portals Event at the store.  We had about 15 people, so we ran 3 tables or about 5 each.  Players were randomly distributed, and the game was afoot!

Spawning on the other side of the table allows one to practice stretching exercises…

Which Army spawned behind you and murdered you to death?
Well, there was a Thyra in front of the Butcher…
Spiky invaders from the north!  Get ’em!

On the model front, 3x MoW Shocktroopers are now built, and are awaiting primer.  Since that’s not terribly interesting, here’s some pictures of some of the armies that the guys are working on for the Slow Grow League!

Yes, it’s a very serious problem.  Every time I see a cool painting thread, or hear about an epic battle, I want to play that army.  For instance, despite the fact I have six factions already, threads like this and this make me want to pick up some constructs…  They look so foreboding and ominous when done in darker colors.  I do need another Hordes army to offset my Warmachine army count…    No!  I must not give in!

What I really need though, is help from you!  There’s a big event in September, over at Blob’s Park and it’s going to be a 35 or 50 pt event.  Possibly both  Its looking like there will be door prizes for everyone, and bonus goodies for a tournament winner, a fully painted raffle, and other awards.

So, with this as incentive, and September as a goal, I need to choose a faction for, basically, the rest of the year…

Being the dorkus I am, I’ve tried to assemble a Pro / Con list for the factions I already own a significant amount of models for.  (Only mercs aren’t included since I only have a battlebox and extra Heavy.)

Legion of Everblight:

  • Most Familiar
  • Already own lots of models
  • Scheme is already set
  • Fair chunk of models are painted already

  • Bad track record – haven’t won a game with them in ages
  • I’ve been playing them for about a year now, time for something new?
  • No idea what list to build.
  • Looking at them makes me a bit sick.  Lots of repairs to do, and not many good memories recently.

  • Have a small core of models
  • Fairly excited about running a Xerxis Brick

  • Don’t have a ton of models, need to buy stuff (why isn’t this in pros?)
  • Lots of detail on the models means long painting times
PG_spacecadet’s Xerxis Skorne Army @ 25 pts

  • Have a good core of models
  • I seem to do better with Warmachine armies than Hordes
  • Have all the models for pStryker T4

  • Really need to strip and re-paint some models
  • Mostly just units left to paint, going to be a chore
  • Do I have enough to make it to September, or will I run short on models?
  • I painted them blue.  Everyone does blue.  Should I do a different scheme??
Bases and details are all these guys need…

  • My first faction
  • Have a good core of models
  • I seem to do better with Warmachine armies than Hordes
  • Several versatile lists with minor model substitutions
  • Only two models from pVlad T4

  • Pre-rodded Iron Fangs need to be stripped and looked at.  EEK!
  • EVERYTHING needs to be painted.  Will I make it?

Not being included.
I have a plan for my Ret, and it’ll need time to make it happen.  Sorry.

Now that you’ve read the lists, what do you think?  Comment below and convince me to pick the faction you think I should.  The more convincing the argument, the better.  Prizes may be involved.
