General Update

All posts tagged General Update

To prime black or white? That is the question.

The google image search for "new hotness" broke the maturity filter, so instead, you get monkeys at computers.

Hello, and welcome to the new site!

First, I apologize to anyone following via RSS – I didn’t know that switching over the feed from the old site would spam you with a bunch of posts.

This will be the new site for all my modelry and bloggery.  I’ve re-worked all the non-blog pages, so please check out the Armies and Gallery pages!  Also, the Tutorials page gets you to all the posts tagged “Tutorial”, and the Battle Reports page does the same.

With the new website comes a new set of goals:

Goal, the First: A wider range of content, and more of it.

I really enjoy writing battle reports, and want to do more of them.  Also, I’m getting a chance to play more these days, and I feel like a tactics article every now and then would be good to.  I’ve also had a few friends express a desire to write something for the blog, so expect guest articles every now and again.Don’t fear the changes though – the primary focus of the website will remain the hobby aspect of miniature wargaming.  However, I feel like maybe having some other topics will keep things fresh and interesting!

With all that, I should be able to exceed my current rate of 2-3 updates a week.  With any luck, that will get flipped around into an update every other day or so.  For now, I’m going to set a goal of every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  3 posts a week.

Keep Going!

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...

Goal, the Second: No more buying models for a particular faction until I have a fully painted 35/50 pt army for that faction.  Also, no new factions until I have a fully painted army for each faction I already own.

This one’s pretty simple.  No buying until I’m fully painted.  The pile of unpainted pewter is just far too large.  That‘s going to change.  The awesome part is, that means a greater variety of content for you, because I’ll have to paint an entire army before I can buy any new models for a particular faction, and I’l have to have a fully painted army for every faction before I can branch into a new one.

And, following the rule of threes…

Goal, the Third:  More feedback!

Yes, my third goal is actually all about you!  I’m hoping with the new format, you’ll all be more responsive, and more forthcoming with your thoughts and ideas.  I really enjoy it when a comment spurs a conversation, so I’ll be doing my best to ask questions near the end of each post, and I’d really love responses, comments and questions.  I promise to respond to every comment left on this website, so long as you keep on leaving them.

To facilitate that, I’ve allowed comments to be made without any need to log in or create an account.  All you need to to is enter a name and e-mail address, and then leave your comment.  However, if you wish, you can register with the WordPress system so whenever you want to leave a comment, you have an avatar picture, and other stuff automatically filled out for you.

So, with all that in mind, explore the new website, and please leave me a comment below to let me know what you think about the new website!

My first tournament as a Press Gang Volunteer, and I have to say, I really, really enjoyed it!

Initially we had 6 players, and a 7th showed up in time to join in for Round 2.  I entered play for round 2 as well, so we had even numbers.
Here’s the initial setup of 5 tables (I wasn’t sure how many we’d have, so I set up for 10, and had stuff for more tables in reserve).
The terrain PG_Linrandir made for Digital Overload was on hand, and made for some beautiful tables.  I ws able to give each table a mini-theme.  One table has a farmhouse (outside the picture) with fences and a rock pile.  Another has coconut huts and a fire pit in the middle.  Further down is a trench warfare table, with trenched and tank traps, and some rough terrain in the middle.  The last one was some ruined temple terrain another player had that lent a good urban feel.

Oh radial deployments…

… how we hate you.

Brian (PG_ForsakenPoptart) came down all teh way from Baltimore to play (and aid me).  He rocked the house with his Harkevich army.  Yes, that’s Harkevich with four Destroyers and Widowmakers.  It was deceptively fast, and very annoying.  Four ARM 23 ‘jacks with free assault charges on feat turn?  Ouch.

I was able to end my loosing streak, winning one of the games I played!  My Beast Handlers even took out some toughed Bane Thralls.  Go Team Speed Bump!  I guess painted models do play better…
Here’s a couple more misc pictures.
Round 1
Round 2

In the end, we gave out some prizes!
First Place: Coin & $15 store credit
Second: Coin & $10 store credit
Third: Coin & $5 store credit
Last place:  Wooden Spoon & $5
My apologies for the severe lack of bloggery lately.  It’s been almost a week since I updated, shame on me.  I’ve been working my way through Wrath, trying to wrap my head around the new hotness and I’ve been working on some models.  It’s been so nice to work on my own models.

I have my Beast Handlers almost complete!  While they’re only worth 3 pts, they are a 6-man unit, and will be my first PP unit completed!  Yay!  I tried taking WIP pictures, but my mixing medium is just too glossy, and they looked horrible, absolutely horrible.  I just need to do their skin, the green bits, touch up the metallics and do arc markings.  Should be easy to do tomorrow, on my day off.

Tonight is game night!  The league is still going strong, and the standings ladder is all over the place!  I have plans for the finale event, and I’ll be discussing them with the players tonight.  Here’s what I’m planning:

Standard 4′ x 4′ table
6+ players
15pt MM / TC lists

6 numbered portals (large base) are placed evenly spread out along a 36″ diameter circle, centered at the middle of the table.

Each player begins at a portal, and deploys within 3″ of the portal.  All players deploy simultaneously.

Players earn 1 pt for each warcaster / warlock they kill, and suffer -1 pt for each death of their warcaster / warlock.

When a warcaster / warlock dies, remove their battlegroup from the table.  At the beginning of that player’s next turn, they roll a d6, and deploy with full health at the corresponding portal.

First to 10 points, wins.

4′ x 4′ table, filled with linear obstacles
6+ players
Deployment zones are 10″ bubbles at table corners and center of table edges (allowing 8 players per table)

Each player brings an “army” consisting of 3 warcasters / warlocks from the same faction.
 – Warlocks use the Focus mechanic, not Fury.
These models all count as a single battlegroup.
Yes, players may triple feat.

Last person with a model standing, wins.

Those will be next weekend.  This weekend, I’m running my first tournament!  It’s a simple one, 35pts, two lists, Death Clocks.  I have no idea what the turnout will be, but I’m hoping for the best!

Whoa boy!  If you haven’t checked out the cray folks over at Lost Hemisphere, you may not know about this particular painting challenge.

Each participant is to have three (3) fully painted 35-50pt T3 Theme forces by Templecon 2012.  That’s about 8 months to paint up 105 pts (at minimum).

While 100 pts over 8 months doesn’t sound like a whole lot, remember that theme lists typically run lots of infantry, and the contestants are not doing any two lists from the same faction.  That’s quite a few schemes to work out and stuff to get painted!
I’m planning on attending Templecon, so that’s a great deadline for me.  I also want to play with more painted miniatures, so this is perfect!
I also want to be fully painted for Blob’s Park – in September.  That’s a 50pt event, for which I’m planning on running Skorne.  I’m not going to be running any theme lists at that event, but I might as well pack in a couple extra models here and there so that I can get theme lists done while painting models for the event.
So, with a deadline of September 24th, I need to paint all my Skorne models.  Namely:
Cataphract Cetrati (full) & Vorkesh
Venators (2x min) & UA
Praetorians (2x min) & UA
Cyclops Brute
Bronzeback Titan
something else, I’m sure…
Those models coupled with pMakeda, a Tyrant Commander and a spare Venator UA will give me what I need for Blob’s park as well as a 35pt pMakeda Tier 4 army.  (50 if I snag Molik Karn and shuffle some things around)
For the second tier list, I’ve had Cygnar on my mind for quite a while now.  I’d like to paint up this 50pt pStryker T4 army:
Commander Coleman Stryker (*6pts)
* Lancer (6pts)
* Lancer (6pts)
* Ol’ Rowdy (9pts)
Field Mechaniks (min) (2pts)
Field Mechaniks (min) (2pts)
Long Gunner Infantry (min) (6pts)
* Officer & Standard (0pts)
Long Gunner Infantry (min) (6pts)
Stormblade Infantry (5pts)
* Officer & Standard (3pts)
* * Stormclad (10pts)
* 1 Storm Gunner (1pts)

It should be a fun mix of shooting, melee and assaulting, with lots of defensive potential.  I also have some conversions in mind for the Stormclad and Stormblades.  Right now, Stryker and one of the Lancers are finished, with Ol’ Rowdy being about 80% done.   Everything else would need to be painted.
I just can’t decide on my last list.
I’m debating between pVlad T4 @35 pts, or something from Legion of Everblight.  Absylonia or Rhyas, probably.  Or, if I had enough time, I could work on my super secret Retribution conversions…  Hmm…
Decisions… decisions…

This week is shaping up to be quite an interesting week.

Monday, while trying to fit a new media card reader into my 2 year old (custom built) PC, something went, terribly, horribly…  wrong.  Somewhere, something went “$&*^# this, I quit!” and Windows couldn’t find some magical driver and boot up.

Luckily, I’d built the system with this type of problem in mind.  My system has an ancient 40GB IDE Hard Drive (from the late 90s, I’m sure).  That’s what I keep my operating system on.  I have a pair of 200GB drives that I install large programs to (video games, mostly) as well as store all my music, videos, etc.
So, I yanked everything but the motherboard, took an old toothbrush to the accumulated dust, and cleaned everything.  I then re-assembled the guts of the PC, but left the storage drives unconnected.
A reformat and reinstall of Windows XP later, and I’m up and running.
All over a $7 media card reader.
I’ll reconnect the storage drives tonight, close up the system and I should be back in business.  This type of thing is something I should do once a year, so I don’t mind it.  I just wish it had been on my schedule, and not been a surprise.
Tuesday, at about 3, I got called into the boss’s office.  Yeah, I was a bit worried.  He tells me to go sit and then goes and fills up his coffee.  I’m wracking my brain for what I could have messed up.  Then, he closes the door when he comes back.
Oh, dear.
Then I find out, effective next month, I’m getting promoted!
So, I took Lyndsey out to dinner, had some beers and a steak, and Key Lime pie for dessert!  (Sweetwater Tavern has amazing Key Lime Pie)
I spent the rest of the evening downloading programs (Chrome, iTunes, GIMP, etc) and updating the PC while I chugged away on the snotling wagons.  They’ll be done by this weekend.  I’m pretty excited, and I’ll have photos tonight.

Oh, and Lyndsey was in an artistic mood and made me a new banner for the blog!  Tell us what you think!

Tomorrow  Wrath should arrive!!  I tried to set myself up for having it on time, but was out of stock, as was the LGS’s distributor.  My book shipped yesterday, so it should be here tomorrow.  3 weeks after release, but hey, I’ll finally have it and be able to dive into all the goodness.
Friday, well, is Friday, and kick starts a 3-day weekend.  w00t!

Pictures of the wagons tonight, and tomorrow I’ll be addressing Lost Hemisphere‘s Clash of the Titans painting challenge!

Transmission End.
